Nurturing skills and building confidence
in the water

Children will become stronger swimmers and more confident kids.  We give our students more than just swimming skills. In YMCA of El Paso classes, students are taught how to swim, about safety and rescue skills, water activities that can be enjoyed for a lifetime, and the character values of honesty, caring, respect, responsibility and faith. The YMCA of El Paso has been teaching children and adults to swim for more than a century. 


Our new swim lesson program has eight (8) stages.

Stages A & B are swim starters for parent & child lessons who learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidence building experiences, while parents learn about water safety, drowning prevention, and the importance of supervision.

Stages 1-3 (Swim Basics) are for pre-school and up. Students learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency by learning two benchmark skills of—Swim, float, swim—sequencing front glide, roll, back float, roll, front glide, and exit and—Jump, push, turn, grab.

Stages 4-6 (Swim Strokes) are for school age and older. Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being, and foster a lifetime of physical activity.

Sessions All classes are set up in eight (8) 30 or 40 minute classes.


Private and Semi-Private Lessons are available. You will get four (4) 30 minute classes.


PARENT-CHILD LESSONS (6-36 months old)- For our littlest swimmers, PARENT-CHILD LESSONS are designed to introduce babies, toddlers and their parents to the aquatic environment. This class will help parents learn realistic developmental expectations, introduce basic aquatic safety to parent and child, and provide a fun and positive first experience in the water. PARENT-CHILD LESSONS will help children with basic motor skills, as well as introduce them to a water environment without fear. Skills include blowing bubbles, floating on front and back, kicking on front and back, social interaction through songs, and basic aquatic safety knowledge for parents. This is a fun class that will help prepare your child for future swim classes!

As children progress in PARENT-CHILD LESSONS classes, they also learn basic paddle stroke, kicking on front and back, floating on front and back, voluntary submersions, climbing into and out of the pool unassisted, jumping in from side of the pool, and safety tips for parents. A portion of each class will focus on parent independence. Your child will spend a little time with our instructor to ease the transition between parent/child classes and our preschool levels.

PRE-SCHOOL LESSONS (3-6 year olds)- This class is designed for the preschooler. Children participate without parents and work on floating on front and back, kicking on front and back, bubbles, putting face in the water, basic paddle stroke, pool safety, boating safety, and water adjustment. Patient instructors work to create a positive experience for these little swimmers. There are no prerequisites for enrollment, other than age.  As children progress in PRE-SCHOOL LESSONS classes, they also learn rotary breathing, backstroke development with proper technique, and elementary backstroke. There is also continued work on treading water, deep water swimming, basic diving, floating, endurance, and pool safety.

YOUTH SWIM LESSONS (6 year olds and up)- beginner level for school-age children. Class seeks to use a progressive floatation system to allow children to be oriented to the water and learn basic aquatic skills at their own pace. The class focuses on initial adjustment to the pool and the group environment. The children learn basic aquatic and safety skills.  Introduces children to front and back floats, front crawl, rotary breathing, breaststroke and elementary backstroke, and swimming with and without floatation devices.  Children will be grouped with children of comparable ability, and will advance as their skills improve.
