Welcome to the

YMCA of El Paso

The YMCA of El Paso strengthens the foundations of our community through well-being and fitness, camps, family time, swim, sports and play, and other activities for people of all ages, incomes and abilities. We’re more than just a place to work out. At the Y, we help build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all with the core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility at the heart of everything we do.

With a commitment to nurturing youth development, promoting healthy living, and fostering a sense of social responsibility, the Y ensures that every individual has access to the essentials needed to learn, grow and thrive.

Miracle League Basketball

There is something about playing the game of basketball that lights up a youngster’s eyes. But for children facing serious physical and mental disabilities, that opportunity can often be difficult to achieve. Basketball courts weren’t exactly designed with wheelchairs and crutches in mind.

The Miracle League Basketball Program removes the barriers which keep mentally and physically disabled children off the basketball court and lets them experience the joy of one of  America’s favorite pastimes. But it’s more than playing a game. The Miracle League is about making new friends, building self-esteem and being treated just like other kids. To help the athletes the Miracle League uses a “buddy” system — pairing each player with an able bodied peer. The resultant bond is beyond imagination.

The Miracle League of El Paso serves children ages 6 on up who suffer from any physical or mental disabilities, which causes them to be excluded — whether intentionally or not — from conventional youth basketball leagues. Our program reaches children from El Paso County and surrounding areas. The children registering in the league are never turned away regardless of their ability to play or pay the $25 registration fee. In most cases, families with children having disabilities have enough trouble making ends meet on a daily basis. Playing basketball is a great diversion for the children and their families. We don’t worry about the fees; there are always generous people who pay the fee on behalf of the child. We have set up a scholarship fund to help those children.

Twenty five dollars hardly covers the cost of a uniform, award at the end of the seasons and supplemental insurance. Our players may not be able to shoot or dribble as well as their healthy peers, but they have an incredible amount of determination to play basketball. We want to help them achieve that dream.

Our Organization is now recruiting coachesbuddies and players for all seasons. For more information contact Sandie Sparks-Olivar at (915) 779-4770 or   SandieELP@miracleleagueofelpaso.org.
